Hello friends!
I have 2 book reviews to share with you all today, and another surprise which I will announce after the reviews. The Sparrow Found A House - By Jason McIntire
What if your new stepdad was a Bible-toting Army Sergeant?
Fifteen-year-old Jessie Rivera is living every teenager's nightmare. Her widowed mom has married a man who wears his heavy Christian values like his sergeant's stripes-on both sleeves.
Glenn Sparrow is persistent, immovable, and not afraid to be firm. Worse than that, he's loving, kind - even fun- and he has Chris, Moe, and Katie completely won over.
But Jessie is determined that she won't be won over, or give up her "freedom" without a fight. She knows what she wants, and it isn't what they've got.
Or is it?
My Thoughts:
This is a great, christian, character-building, & hilarious book that held my attention the whole way through. The new dad says some really funny things in the first few chapters.
The 4 Rivera kids, Chris, Jessie, Moe & Katie, stay at home for 2 weeks while they're mom is on her honeymoon with their new dad. When their parents arrive home, the new dad, Sergeant Sparrow changes everyone's life. He arrived with a firm hand and is ready to get the family into a routine. Jessie has a really hard time adapting to the new dad and lifestyle, but not Chris, Moe and Katie. They are thrilled with the new dad and take a liking to him right away.
I have been wanting to read this book for a while, and was so thrilled when Jason McIntire agreed to let me do a review on it. If you have not read this book, I highly recommend it. It's good for all boys and girls of all ages to read, as there is no inappropriate language or other things in the book. I like the way it explains the gospel clearly, as some of the young children get saved while on a camping trip. This would be a fantastic book to read as a family also!
Rating: 5 GOLD STARS!!!!!!
Flight School - by Jason McIntire
So you're graduating from homeschool. Now what?
On the verge of adult life, Chris Rivera is eager to get started on his career as a director of Christan movies. But he'll have to do it without his best friend Ben, who has traded childhood toys for law books...and a very pretty study partner.
Meanwhile, Jessie is getting a lot of attention from conservative neighbor John and trendy friend Galen - each of whom, for drastically different reasons, seems a little too good to be true.
In the face of hard questions and big temptations, how do you know which choice is right? And where do you get the courage to make it?
As much as I was excited about reading The Sparrow Found A House, I was even more thrilled when Jason McIntire offered to send me the sequel, Flight School. I didn't even know The Sparrow Found A House had a sequel, and I was really excited that I was going to get to read the book before it was released to the public. :D
When Chris and his friend start making movies, his siblings help him. They get their neighbors involved in the movie Chris and his friend are making, but everything doesn't go as planned. Chris learns to trust God while his sister Katie learns a lesson in being humble. She is a really good speller and attends many spelling bees. She is constantly having to watch her attitude to make sure she doesn't get prideful.
I enjoyed Flight School almost as much as I like The Sparrow Found A House. It wasn't as funny, but it was still excellent and well written. This book is very clean, and recommended for children ages 12 and up. I think there should be a book 3 written and published. :) This book would also be great to read as a family.
I want to give a HUGE thank you to Jason for graciously sending me these books so I could do a review. You can check out his website here.
*I was given both books for free in exchange for an honest review.*
And now, onto the announcement!
Elisha Press is having a launch giveaway to spread the word about the newest book Flight School, and I'm so happy to be a part of it. Below are some points the author wrote about the book.
- This book contains no overdone romance, violence, or other elements unsuitable for children. For kids younger than 12, parents might want to preview the non-graphic account of birth in Chapter 31.
- The "Mullerites" mentioned in the book are a fictional group, loosely based on any of the well-known Anabaptist or German Baptist denominations in the U.S.
- Flight School can be appreciated by those who have not already read its prequel, The Sparrow Found A House.
- If readers wish to read The Sparrow Found A House first, it may be downloaded for free from this site.
- Any plans for a third Sparrow book are still undecided at this point. Readers can subscribe for future updates.
Flight School follows the Rivera kids as they meet new friends, explore careers, and encounter the challenges and choices that come with adult life. As a homeschool graduate himself, Jason knows the things that matter most to homeschoolers, and how to write about those things in a way that will edify, resonate, and entertain.
"If you like Flight School," Jason says, "thank God. If you don't like it, blame me."
So I hope you go enter the giveaway and tell your friends about it. :)
Have a happy day!
~Blessings to you in Christ,
Ashley
