Tall, Fat and Upside Down

Today's Creation Moment: Tall, Fat and Upside Down

Luke 6:44  "For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes."

If you want to snack on fruit from a 10-story-high Grandidier's baobab tree, you'd better bring a very tall ladder. That's because there are no branches to climb until you get to near the very top of the tree. And you can forget about wrapping your arms and legs around the trunk. The baobab's  massive cylindrical trunks measure up to 10 feet across, and are quite smooth.
Adansonia grandidieri, baobab from MadagascarThe Grandidier's baobob is probably the strangest and most magnificent of the eight species of baobab, and it is found nowhere else on earth than Madagascar. Lack of water can sometimes be a problem for plants in Madagascar, so the baobab overcomes this by storing water within the fibrous wood of the trunk. It is so effective at storing water, the tree's diameter actually fluctuates with rainfall. Though the tree trunks look solid, elephants know they can gouge into the wood with their tusks to enjoy a nice drink of water.
Other species of baobab tree – like the ones in Africa – look as if they were built upside down – with their roots at the top of the tree. African baobabs are also the fattest trees in the world. Some have a "waist size" of more than 165 feet, which is bigger around than their height. Baobabs can also grow to a great age – some are said to have been alive at the time of Christ.
Baobab trees look very different than any other trees on our planet and demonstrate that there is no end to the creativity of God.
Happy Saturday!! What are you doing this weekend?

Patterns of Design

Today's Creation Moment: Patterns of Design

2 Timothy 1:13  "Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus."

If you own a car, you know that it has an engine, doors and, of course, wheels. There are some engineering solutions to transportation problems that are clearly better than others, and no matter who makes the car, designers eventually arrive at the same solutions because they work best.
Karl Benz, inventor of the modern carThe same pattern holds true in creation. If you were designing genetic material that did one thing in one type of creature and a similar thing in a completely different type of creature, you would use the best design for both. That would result in similar genetic material in both creatures that was subtly different enough to do its unique job in each creature. As a result of using the best design solution, rather than chance, two very different creatures would have similar genetic material. And that's what we are finding as we learn more about genetics. For example, we know that a particular gene in a developing mouse embryo influences the development of the back part of its brain. A very similar gene in the fly influences the development of its antenna, which are sensors that are tied into the brain. Another gene that is similar in people, fish and flies, influences the unique development of eyes in those creatures.
Similarities like these argue against the chance development of the genetic code. The same Designer that invented the genetic code also gave us His Word, which He also intelligently designed to bring us the knowledge of salvation in Jesus Christ.
Have a joyful weekend!!

Intimidating Duets

                                Today's Creation Moment: Intimidating Duets

Ecclesiastes 12:4b   "... and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low..."

Precision in communication is highly important. This is especially true of the type of communication called music, whether you are talking about Mozart or magpie-larks.
Female magpie-larkOnly about three percent of bird species are known to sing duets. In a duet, one mate begins singing, and the other mate begins a half second later. Among Australian magpie-larks, pairs that are newly mated usually lack that precision. However, in pairs that have been together for two years, the lag time of the duet usually varies by only a few hundredths of a second.
Researchers also discovered that this precision serves a purpose. Male magpie-larks respond to perceived threats by increasing their singing. When they played the less-precise duets to 12 pairs of other magpie-larks, the males only responded in this way seven times in five minutes. However, the more-precise duets resulted in nine responses in five minutes. In short, other magpie-larks are more intimidated by pairs that sing with precision than by those who do not. This is important in preserving an established couple's territory from invasion by new couples.
Communication with precision is yet another fingerprint of God on the creation. In Scripture, the ultimate in precise communication, God even points us to the birds as He urges us to recognize His involvement in the creation.

How's your week going, friends? It rained here all day yesterday, and this afternoon it started raining again. Hope you have a good and godly day!

Much love in the Lord,
Ashley

God's Mercy Is Sweet

Today's Creation Moment: God's Mercy Is Sweet
Psalm 119:103  "How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!"

We hear many warnings these days that tell us not to eat this food, it's full of cholesterol, or that food, it's loaded with fat. It's easy to come to the conclusion that the curse of sin has turned the whole creation against us. But God is a merciful God. He has given us the ability to learn about many of the beneficial foods and medicines that He has created.
Xylitol crystalsOne good example of this is Xylitol, also known as birch sugar. Earlier research showed that birch sugar, used more in Europe than America as a sweetener, inhibits growth of bacteria that cause tooth decay. Researchers in Finland wondered if birch sugar inhibited any other bacteria. They gave one group of pre-school children sucrose-based chewing gum and a similar group birch-sugar gum five times a day. The group that used the birch sugar gum had only about half as many ear infections. Scientists aren't sure how the birch sugar reduces ear infections. They suspect that it somehow prevents the bacteria that cause the infections from attaching to cells in the mouth and ear. If this is what happens, there is an added bonus. Since the sugar does not attack the bacteria directly, the bacteria would be unlikely to develop any defense against it.
In His mercy, God has given us more than just solutions to our problems in this life. Through His Son, Jesus Christ, He grants us the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. And through His Word, He tells us what salvation means.

Scientists Recognize that we have a designer earth.

Happy Tuesday friends! Here's today's Creation Moment: Scientists Recognize that we have a designer earth.

Isaiah 45:12  "I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded."

Evolutionists often claim that evolution can produce living things that look as if they are designed. This is their way of answering arguments that things that look designed don't need a Designer. However, in January of 2000, a paleontologist and an astronomer teamed up to publish a book that says that conditions on Earth are so unique, there is probably no other life like us in the universe. (We do need to keep in mind, however, that they write from an evolutionary perspective.)
Rare Earth by Ward and BrownleeScientists Peter D. Ward and Donald C. Brownlee concluded that conditions could exist elsewhere in the universe that could support microbes. However, there may be nowhere else in the universe that life above that level might exist. First, they say, we can rule out life near the centers of galaxies because lethal levels of several types of radiation exist there. The scientists conclude that the Earth is perfectly placed for intelligent life. Our moon is just the right size to control our climate, tilt and tides. The planet Jupiter acts as a giant shield to protect us from meteors and asteroids, and it, like the Earth, has an orbit that does not threaten other planets. Our sun is a heavy-element star with a rare elliptical orbit. And earth's atmosphere has a carefully balanced mix of elements with just enough carbon to support life.
Biological evolution cannot explain these delicate and unusual designs, but the designs can easily be accounted for if they came from the hand of an all wise, all knowing Creator.

Yours in Christ,
Ashley

Fishy Sign Language

Today's Creation Moment: Fishy Sign Language

Galatians 5:13  "For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another."

Humans aren't the only ones who use sign language, a recent study has found. Two types of fish are now known to use gestures to help them capture prey. Both the grouper and coral trout hunt cooperatively with other kinds of aquatic sea life. And they pull this off with sign language.
Coral troutThough grouper are very fast in the open water, they are much too big to pursue prey that swim into small areas. But that's not a problem for the giant moray eel. Their slim bodies make it easy to crawl into small holes. So when the grouper's prey flees to an area it can't reach, the grouper points to it by rotating its body so that its head faces downward and then shakes its head back and forth in the direction of the potential meal.
Similarly, coral trout make gestures like the grouper's headstand signal to show their octopus hunting buddies the location of the prey. For the octopus, fitting into tight spaces is no problem.
We humans are often unable to accomplish a task by ourselves. If we are wise, we will ask others for help. And when others turn to us for help, we should do the same. God didn't make us all alike. We need one another within the body of Christ. Use the gifts God has given you to be of service to others. And remain in fellowship with fellow believers so you can build up one another in Christ.

Amazing Winter Moths

Today's Creation Moment: Amazing Winter Moths

Job 42:2  "I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee."

As fall comes to the temperate regions of North America, Europe and Asia, many birds head for warmer climates, and insects enter suspended animation. While it might appear that nature is shutting down for the winter, amazing things are happening. About 50 species of moths are awakening from spending the summer in suspended animation. Winter is when these moths are active, despite the fact that they don't have any of the biological antifreeze that some other creatures do. The metabolic costs of such chemicals would hamper their way of life.
Winter mothWinter moths can live as they do – even though they freeze below 32 degrees Fahrenheit – because they emerge from the leaf clutter on the forest floor where temperatures almost never fall below 37 degrees. But when the air temperature rises above freezing, the moths emerge, shiver for several minutes to warm up, and look for food. Maple sap is among their favorite foods. One stomach full of this high-energy food provides enough energy for one of these moths to hibernate all winter. When active, they are able to increase their metabolism by over 8,000 times, using the same amount of energy that sustains them all winter, in a mere 30 minutes. Summer moths shed heat from the thorax, while winter moths conserve their heat with an entirely different heat exchange system.
Winter moths illustrate that there are no limits to what God can do. So if you are ever tempted to wonder how God could have made the entire creation in six days, just remember His winter moths.

Hope your Sunday is filled with the joy of Jesus!

God's Healing

                                Today's Creation Moment: God's Healing

Matthew 9:12   "But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick."

The blessings of modern medicine have saved many lives. Unfortunately, modern medicine's accomplishments have led many people to believe that good medical treatment is more important than God's healing power when you are sick. Astounding medical discoveries are being made all the time. For example, 60 percent of those with diabetes suffer nerve damage. This nerve damage can result in the body's inability to control blood pressure as well as other problems. In some diabetics, branching nerve cells swell, cutting off normal cell communication.
Molecular structure of IGF-1Medical researchers have been testing a growth factor known as IGF 1 to see if it will stop this damage. To their surprise, not only did it stop the nerve damage in diabetic rats, it actually reversed the damage that had already been done! Tests are continuing to see if this treatment is safe for humans.
Do advances like this mean that God is becoming less important in the healing process, as many think? The truth is, all healing comes from God. So when you pray for healing, know that if it is God's will, God will heal you. In our usual experience, He uses modern medicine to do that, but if He wants, He will simply touch you with good health.
Modern medicine is a blessing from God for our good. Despite its accomplishments, however, modern medicine can never heal the root cause of our illnesses – sin. Only Jesus Christ can do that.

These Parrots Aren't Just Parroting

Today's Creation Moment: These Parrots Aren't Just Parroting

Psalm 94:10  "He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know?"

Researchers at Purdue University are demonstrating that parrots are capable of intelligent communication. Their carefully designed experiments have convinced even skeptics that the two parrots under study are not just giving conditioned responses. Their results are challenging the accepted scientific knowledge about animal intelligence and the evolutionary claim that intelligence is one of the traits that separate us from animals.
Alex participating in a numerical cognition experimentThe parrots' names are Griffin and Alex. Researchers can show Alex two triangles, one red and one green. They ask what's different about them. Alex will answer, "Color." When asked what's similar about them, he will answer, "Shape." If there is nothing similar, Alex even understands the concept of nothing. Asked what's similar about the shapes, he will answer, "None." Researchers say that about five percent of the time someone will mistakenly tell Alex that he has given a wrong answer when he has not. Alex, however, insists that his answer is right until the questioner discovers the mistake.
Both parrots can identify a wide range of objects. Both parrots are even picking up words they have not been systematically taught and are using them correctly. Once, when Griffin was having trouble pronouncing a new word, Alex turned to him and said, "Speak clearly."
Evolutionists are now having to rethink the idea that intelligence separates us from animals. The fact that we were created in God's image to have a relationship with Him is what really separates us from the animals.

Black or White?

Today's Creation Moment: Black or White?

Zechariah 6:6   "The black horses which are therein go forth into the north country; and the white go forth after them; and the grisled go forth toward the south country."

Are zebras white with black stripes or are they black with white stripes? If you're thinking that zebras just have a coat of two colors and that they don't have a "background" color at all, think again. Embryologists tell us that the zebra's background color is black and that their stripes and bellies are white additions.
Researchers used painted horses for their studyBut scientists are now trying to find out why zebras have stripes at all. The best they can tell, the stripes may make zebras less appetizing to large biting flies that often carry fatal diseases. Using painted horses, Swedish scientists found that zebra stripes disrupt light patterns that tsetse flies and horseflies use to find food and water.
One of the authors of the study, evolutionary ecologist Susanne Ã…kesson, said the study is being used to show that the zebra's stripes are a result of evolution and natural selection.
As we've seen so many times before, she will not see this as an example of an ingenious design by a Master Designer. Evolutionists are taught to believe in no design and no designer. Creationists, on the other hand, accept what common sense tells us. We can't help but see a most magnificent design in what God has created.
Since the Bible has not been proved wrong about anything, we can know for certain that zebras were painted, as it were, by an Artist who cares for all His creatures – especially us!
